The memory of the suffering of Roma people during World War II remains insufficiently present in collective consciousness. For this reason, memorial activities are important not only for the Roma community but also for the entire society.
A guided tour through the history of Roma in Mladenovac, conducted with the expert guidance of Dr. Milan Koljanin from the Staro Sajmište Memorial Centre, was a powerful educational and emotional event. Participants learned more about the contributions of Roma to the local community throughout history, as well as their suffering during the Holocaust.
This activity is part of a broader public campaign within the “Positive Narratives” project, aiming to shed light on neglected chapters of history and raise awareness about the importance of the culture of remembrance.
Education, workshops, campaigns, and memorial events are all part of a unique approach – changing social narratives through a combination of knowledge, art, and human stories.
Citizens’ participation in such events not only enriches their understanding but also contributes to laying the foundation for a more just society that does not forget but learns from the past.
