Media as partners in the fight against discrimination

In Mladenovac, the first training session for local journalists dedicated to affirmative and anti-discriminatory reporting on the Roma community took place. The media play a crucial role in shaping public opinion, which is why it is important for professionals in this field to be educated, sensitized, and empowered to create content that promotes equality and respect.

During the training, participants analyzed examples from media practice, identified common stereotypes, and discussed the responsibilities of journalists. Through open dialogue, they shared the challenges they face and the ways they can contribute to more inclusive public information.

The training was designed as a practical tool for strengthening professional standards and ethical principles, but also as an opportunity to contribute through the media to creating a space where Roma voices have equal value and visibility.

This activity is part of a comprehensive approach to building a society in which diversity and respect for human rights form the basis of everyday communication, both at the local and national levels.

The activity emerged from the project “Positive Narratives about Roma and Roma Culture.”

About the project: The project is funded by the European Union and is implemented by the City Municipality of Mladenovac and the Forum of Roma in Serbia. It is part of a broader EU project titled “Support for Sustainable Social Protection Services in the Community and Inclusion Policies at the Local Level,” for which the Ministry of Labor, Employment, Veterans, and Social Affairs is responsible, while the Standing Conference of Towns and Municipalities is the implementing partner.
