The Forum Roma Serbia, in partnership with Solidaritätsdienst International e.V. (SODI) from Germany, is implementing the project “Remembering for Peace – Empowering Young People and Local Communities through Remembrance of the Porajmos and Education about Antiziganism”, with the support of the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen (ifa).
The project aims to strengthen the culture of remembrance, combat antigypsyism, and empower young Roma and non-Roma people through education, dialogue, and joint initiatives. Through workshops, visits to memorial sites, public events, and international cooperation, the project creates space for discussions about the Porajmos – the persecution and genocide of Roma during the Second World War – and its connection to contemporary forms of discrimination and social exclusion.
A special focus is placed on engaging young people from Kragujevac, Požarevac, Niš, Belgrade, and Novi Sad, while also fostering cooperation among local institutions, educators, researchers, civil society organizations, and Roma communities. The project encourages the development of joint initiatives, the exchange of experiences, and the creation of local networks that contribute to inclusion, mutual understanding, and social cohesion.
As part of the project, educational workshops, mentoring programs, visits to memorial sites in Serbia, a study visit to Germany, public events, and social media activities will be organized. Through these activities, young people will have the opportunity to develop creative content, explore historical topics, and actively participate in promoting human rights, democracy, and the culture of remembrance.
The project contributes to strengthening democratic values, increasing the visibility of Roma perspectives in the public sphere, and creating safe spaces for dialogue, cooperation, and collective action against discrimination.
