Remembering the past is not only about preserving historical facts – it is also an essential step toward understanding the present and building a more just future. This is why the project “Remembering for Peace – Remembrance of the Porajmos and Education about Antigypsyism” places a strong focus on working with young people, encouraging them to develop awareness of human rights, equality, and social responsibility through education, dialogue, and collective action.
Through the project, jointly implemented by Forum Roma Serbia and SODI, young people have the opportunity to learn about the history of the suffering of Roma during the Second World War, known as the Porajmos, while also exploring contemporary forms of discrimination, prejudice, and antigypsyism that continue to affect Roma communities today.
Based on the belief that informed and engaged young people are key to creating a more inclusive society, the project provides space for open exchange, critical reflection, and a deeper understanding of diverse social experiences. Through workshops, discussions, and collaborative activities, participants examine how historical legacies continue to shape present-day social relations and how each individual can contribute to combating discrimination and strengthening mutual respect.
Throughout the project, young people from several cities across Serbia will take part in educational workshops, visits to memorial sites, public events, and creative activities. These initiatives provide opportunities for learning, sharing experiences, and initiating important conversations within local communities, with the goal of building a society where solidarity, understanding, and equal opportunities are accessible to all.
By fostering a culture of remembrance and encouraging the active participation of young people, the project contributes to the development of communities that recognize the value of diversity and actively oppose all forms of discrimination. In this way, remembrance becomes not only a reflection on the past, but also a tool for shaping a future based on dignity, equality, and respect for human rights.
